Today would have been Ruth Wakefield’s 111th birthday. She was the inventor of the chocolate chip cookie.

Her invention was actually a mistake—while finishing a batch of cookies for her restaurant, she realized she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She chopped up a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar as a substitute. Though she expected the chocolate to melt, restaurant patrons loved them as they were.

Nestlé chocolate bar sales soared and she struck a deal with owner, Andrew Nestlé: she would have her recipe printed on every package of Nestlé chocolate morsels in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate.

Mistakes are always nicer when they’re delicious 🍪
